New Stop Smoking Service at your Local Pharmacy

15th July 2025

From August 1st, a new Stop Smoking service will be available in community pharmacies across Cornwall, offering professional support to help smokers quit for good.

Quitting smoking is one of the most important steps anyone can take to improve their health and wellbeing - but we know it’s not an easy one. That’s why Pharmacy Cornwall is proud to support the rollout of the new Stop Smoking service, designed to make effective, expert support more accessible than ever. Whether you’ve been thinking about quitting, have tried before, or just want to explore your options, your local pharmacy is a great place to start.

This new service is built around the convenience of your local pharmacy. When you pop into your community pharmacy, you’ll be able to speak to a trained member of the pharmacy team, who can offer advice tailored to your situation - without having to contend with waiting rooms. The support offered at your local chemist may include one-on-one conversations, expert advice on choosing nicotine replacement products, and guidance on what you can do to manage cravings and avoid triggers. The service is completely free, and you won’t need a GP referral or appointment to take part - just pop in and speak to your pharmacy team from the beginning of August onwards.

Better Health Starts with One Decision

The health benefits of quitting smoking begin almost immediately. Within just 20 minutes, your heart rate starts to drop. Within 48 hours, your body will have expelled the carbon monoxide from your system. Within a few weeks, you’ll likely notice that you’re breathing easier, your energy levels are improving, and physical activity feels less of a strain.

Long-term, quitting smoking drastically reduces your risk of life-threatening conditions like heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Your lungs begin to repair, your circulation improves, and your immune system strengthens. For pregnant people, quitting smoking greatly reduces the risks of complications during pregnancy and birth. For parents, it creates a healthier home environment for children.

Stopping smoking can also have a positive impact on your mental health. Many people report reduced anxiety, a greater sense of control, and an improved mood after quitting. Add to that the financial benefits - with the average smoker spending thousands of pounds a year on cigarettes - and it’s easy to see why quitting is one of the best decisions you can make.
